Family kayaking, Baila’s first solo!

We kayaked the area north of the Haverstraw kayak launch.  It was Baila’s first time with her new Perception Acadia Scout.  It’s the same model and color scheme as Mechel’s.

Here’s Baila paddling (Mechel is in the distance):

Harriman hike to ORAK and Jackie Jones fire tower

The four of us went for a quick hike today in Harriman.  I didn’t bring a camera, but there’s a blog post here of the route we took with some photographs as well, albeit the wrong season.

The Jackie Jones fire tower is quite high, and the fact that it’s made of rusting angle iron doesn’t [...]

Hiking with the kids

I took the kids on what turned out to be a 4.5 mile hike today.  We visited Third Reservoir and Breakneck Pond.  Start point is here.

Las Vegas / Death Valley trip

We went out to Las Vegas in late January. I was excited to use my MiMo 7” USB monitor. There’s just one cable between the laptop and the monitor, and no power cable:

The first thing we did Tuesday morning was visit Grandma:

On the way to Death Valley, we stopped at the Lathrop Wells rest area:

The ugliest snowman ever

We didn’t have much snow, but we did our best.  I’m only going to accept responsibility for the bottom ball:

I hope it melts soon, I think it’s kinda creepy.

Family Snowshoeing

We only got six inches of snow from the “big storm”, but it was enough to get in a little snowshoeing.  Mechel used my old Readfeathers, and Baila used the youth Atlas snowshoes.  Unlike last year, Baila did the whole two hour hike.

We started out on an old rail bed:

Searching for the perfect campsite

This summer, we took the RV to a couple of state campgrounds.  It was crowded and not so much fun.  Off-season RVing in Oregon was great – the weather was mild and the campgrounds were empty.  In the northeast, the campgrounds are only open from April to September, and they are very crowded.

The good news [...]

Assateague Island Sukkos adventure

This Chol Hamoed we took the RV down to Assateague Island. It took a bit of time to get everything ready to go, so we didn’t leave until 2am on Monday morning (Motzei Sukkos). We drove straight through, arriving at 7am Monday morning. I was a bit sleepy at 3:45am, but after [...]

Weekend in Connecticut

We spent the weekend camping at Housatonic Meadows State Park.  It was very, very hot and muggy, but we had fun exploring the trails near the campground.

On Sunday, we drove down to Woodbury, CT to a recreation of the Battle of Cedar Creek.  600 reenactors simulated a battle which pitted 32,000 Union soldiers against 21,000 [...]

Boating on the Hudson

We took the boat out for the first time this season with Glen and Maryann.  Ran like a charm!  We ran from Haverstraw Bay park to Indian Point and back.
