Step 1 - make the hole

          <message>The first step of the project was to cut the hole in the wall on Mechel's room's side.

We first made a couple holes to figure out what we were up against. Turns out it's a plaster wall on a chicken-wire-like lathe:

Since the HVAC vent is in the area we're constructing the alcove, we need to raise the alcove up to clear the duct (we could move the duct, but that would be a pain). After doing a little bit more poking around, we taped the area to be removed and scored the inside edge with a knife:

Using hammers, we broke most of the plaster off the lathe. Using chisels, and also by pounding on a piece of 2x4 pressed against the inside edge of where we scored the plaster, we removed the plaster:

We then used wire cutters to remove the lathe. While pulling off the already-cut lathe, I tugged on a piece that was still attached, which caused the plaster on the center right side to crumble off. Grr!

</message>

Remodeling the kitchen

          <message>Dad and I started the "make an alcove for the refrigerator so we can replace the 1940s oven with two oven ranges" project. The north side of the kitchen now houses the old oven and refrigerator. By making an alcove on the south side of the kitchen, we can free up that space, throw out the old oven, and in those two empty spaces put two new ovens.

The alcove is being constructed by creating a 34"w x 34"d x 69"h space for the refrigerator to live in. This space is being taken from Mechel's room, which shares a wall with the kitchen. The refrigerator will then be flush with the south wall of the kitchen.</message>
