Sunday Stuff

I had a 4 day weekend, so I go quite a bit done around the house, including restoring electricity to the Garage. We had friends over for our annual Thanksgiving-on-Shabbos meal, which was very nice.

Today we had some pretty nasty weather, but last Sunday was nice and I took another ride to Stony Point. I took a slightly different route in order to avoid the steep downhill on Thiels-Mount Ivy Road. On the way back, I took Halley Drive onto Cheesecote Mountain (It's the hump on the profile after Call Hollow Road):

Even though my cyclecomputer, which was in the pocket of my biking pants, went through the wash twice, it's still working, although the display is pretty dim (hopefully it's just the battery). 23.4 miles, 1:56 ride time, 13.28 MPH average, 38.6 MPH max.

Sunday (11/7/04) stuff

Two Sundays ago I went on an afternoon ride to the Stony Point Battlefield. Weather was just on the chilly side of perfect. The ride took a bit longer than planned, and I ended up riding the last 5 miles in the dark with only front and rear LED strobes.

The descent on Thiells Mount Ivy Road was pretty amazing - I hit 43.8 MPH. Sadly, when I got to Stony Point Battlefield, it was closed for the season. Riding through the Stony Point Marina at sunset was really nice - the sun's rays were shining through the rushes as I rode past the wetlands. I had to detour on the way back, as the bridge over Cedar Pond Brook on Old 210 was gone, so I rode south and took Reservoir Road across.

TopoUSA shows 26.7 miles, but the cycle computer shows 24.75. Hmm.... The ride took 2:17, of which I was moving for 1 hour, 52 minutes. 13.22 MPH average according to the cycle computer, but if I use TopoUSA's distance I get 14.22 MPH.

Some things just don't mix

What happens when you put together a Redneck, some firearms, and a broadband Internet connection?

A website that lets you fire a gun mounted on a motorized platform at passing animals from the comfort of your home, of course.

The idea came last year while viewing another Web site on which cameras posted in the wild are used to snap photos of animals.

"We were looking at a beautiful white-tail buck and my friend said 'If you just had a gun for that.' A little light bulb went off in my head," he said.

Here's the rest of the story.

It's awfully dark in here....

So sick....

Trish and Mechel got very sick over the weekend, with both vomiting and diarrhea. I seemed to have picked it up as well. It started around 2pm, and got worse and worse. Right now I'm in bed trying not to move too much. I'm typing this on a Windows CE tablet using remote desktop to control my PC (and in this case typing into Bloggar). If only the on screen keyboard were 25% bigger....

Since remote desktop routes the audio to the remote desktop client, I'm also listening to music via RealPlayer.

Neat!

So I was wondering....

...Looking at the various states on CNN.com, and how even states like Oregon that went to Kerry only had a few "blue" counties, I wondered what the "red/blue" map would look like if it were done by county, not by state.

Well look what I found:

Even my county of Rockland, NY, less than 20 miles from Manhattan, went to Bush.

Update: Counties won by President Bush currently comprise 3.28 million square miles of land. Kerry's counties constitute 741,000 square miles. In other words, measuring by land, President Bush carried 82% of the country, while John Kerry took 18%. (Hat Tip: Evan Maloney)

Sunday Stuff

In the morning I used the lawn mower to suck up all the leaves that had fallen on our lawn. In the afternoon we all went to Rockland Lake. Trish used her rollerblades, I used my roller skates, and the kids rode in the Burley (we have the Walk 'n' Roller kit). After circling the lake, we let Mechel use his Fisher Price roller skates. I left the camera in the van, so you'll have to settle for pictures at New Yorkled.

Retirement will be a busy time

...if I do even half the projects I'd like to. This has got to be close to the top of the list. Even higher that the Garden Monorail.

I wonder if the cheesy CHiPs-esqe music is included...
