Quick Snowshoeing

Baila was in school, so Trish and Mechel met me at the Rockleigh Borough Hall for a quick snowshoe in the Rockleigh Woods Sanctuary / Lamont Reserve (map).  We took the Yellow trail up and the red trail back down, then walked around the Ice Pond and exited onto Rockleigh Road.  We were the first people to walk the red trail, which is always nice:

It was like herding cats, but we got it done:

Skating and museums

We went ice skating at the Bear Mountain rink today.  Trish is on the left edge of the frame, and Mechel is the fellow in the grey and red jacket in the center of the frame:

We then headed north to the Hudson Highlands Nature Museum, where they have a collection of live indigenous animals, as well as an exhibit on the history of the Hudson River and its sturgeon population.  During “meet the animals”, we spent some time with a 6-foot long rat snake.

Our last stop of the day was the New Windsor Cantonment State Historic Site, where George Washington’s Continental Army wintered in 1783.  There’s a small visitor center, and a few period buildings.  In 1783, there were 570 buildings erected to house the army.  They consumed so much wood building the cabins and keeping them warm through the winter that the army had to move on before the next winter, as there was no wood left within a reasonable distance for cooking and heating.

All in all, a fun day.
