We then headed north to the Hudson Highlands Nature Museum, where they have a collection of live indigenous animals, as well as an exhibit on the history of the Hudson River and its sturgeon population.  During “meet the animals”, we spent some time with a 6-foot long rat snake.

 

Our last stop of the day was the New Windsor Cantonment State Historic Site, where George Washington’s Continental Army wintered in 1783.  There’s a small visitor center, and a few period buildings.  In 1783, there were 570 buildings erected to house the army.  They consumed so much wood building the cabins and keeping them warm through the winter that the army had to move on before the next winter, as there was no wood left within a reasonable distance for cooking and heating.
